And How Long Will It Take?
This question is often asked by young people when faced with the possibility to make a change—a change to the better and the just. The latter question has two reasons: one, the youth is naturally full of eagerness—they like direct and immediate actions and want to see fast results.
Two, our tendency for selfishness: we want answers to our problem and want to enjoy immediate results doing a minimum effort—now, now, now!
We also tend to forget something very important: Justice, Goodness, Beauty and Truth begin from within, for if we are unjust and evil we cannot demand social change; if we do not make the effort to improve ourselves we cannot ask others to do the same.
The 19th and 20th centuries witnessed many attempts to impose a certain political solution to the problems of human societies. From Communism, Socialism, Capitalism, Fascism, to Nazism, etc. who all believed they held the ‘answer’. These solutions were well planned... elaborated at a desk on a sheet of paper, suggested by thinkers who never attempted to practice or experience it. They did not want to change themselves, they wanted to change others through techniques. They were neither characterized by their wisdom, nor for being examples of what they were preaching. They were intellectuals, thinkers, and theoreticians... but they were never philosophers.
The result? Millions of deaths and horrible crimes against humanity! The 20th century has been the bloodiest century in all of human history; Russia, Nazi Germany, Vietnam, and Cambodia are just a few examples.
Even though it had technology and all sort of knowledge at its disposal, this old world did not know how to create authentic men, it did not know how to provide true education for the human being. They were just satisfied with providing information, through educational programs that were merely intellectual and informational, never caring about the inner education of man.
So, after the list of failures, there remains the Last Revolution: the RE-EVOLUTION, in other words, to begin by altering the base, to begin with the revolution of changing man; in short, to improve him, and to focus on morals and formation of the character above anything. And when I say moral I do not mean a set of religious commands, I mean TO BE COHERENT, to be faithful to the word we give, to be honest, to act according to our own convictions and to perform our duties, only for their sake and not for getting any advantage or reward.
But, again, do we still have a long way to go before we arrive to something better?
Whether it is a lot of time or just a single day all depend on us, because the opportunity of choosing lies within ourselves: do we want to be part of the old world which is falling into pieces, destroyed by materialism and superstitions, or would we like to form part of a new and better world? Do we want to be an "old style man," only interested by our own benefits, or would we like to form part of the new legions of men, full of altruism, enthusiasm, generosity and looking for a unique reward: the satisfaction for accomplishing our duties.
We have to choose.
For if our choice is to be part of the old world, we will drown in, and with, it, and we will be like all the old men around us: bitter, complaining all the time, unsatisfied, and full of fears.
But, if on the contrary our choice is to be part of the new world, then, from this very moment we will have access to a new way of seeing and experiencing things, we will understand why we are here and what is our duty, and we will work to help this new world to rise.
How many years have we dedicated to building up our own, personal, happiness? Think carefully, how many years passed under the tutelage of our parents, how many years in school and university, how many years looking for a job, for a flat, for a car, for a person whom to love? And after all of that, after that price that we paid, are we happy? Or are we still unsatisfied?
Or may be we could find satisfaction building the next generation's happiness, repeating the same things with our own children, though... Unfortunately I think that at the end we will be disappointed with ourselves—just like our parents.
So, it is time to try something different, before we lose our youth, our courage and strength to change. Now is the time…now we may begin to live within the New World.
